Periodontology

Periodontology is concerned with the curative and preventive treatment of diseased gums. Periodontology can also have an aesthetic role in the harmonization of the teeth.

Periodontal maintenance

Just like diabetes or high blood pressure, periodontitis is a chronic disease. This means that their treatment allows them to be stabilized, facilitating the hygiene of the teeth and avoiding recurrences as much as possible.

Once a periodontal disease has been diagnosed and treated, it will be necessary to maintain the result obtained and prevent any recurrence.

Periodontal maintenance consists of a lifelong follow-up of the patient and his gums in order to anticipate or intercept the recurrence of periodontal disease.

Appointments are scheduled every 3 to 6 months taking into account the periodontal destruction that has occurred, the quality of brushing, smoking, as well as all other risk factors .

Conduct of the session:

During these maintenance appointments, the dentist (or periodontist) reviews the brushing technique, if it can be improved. He then cleans the dental surfaces by scaling, root planing and polishing. A radiographic assessment is usually considered every 1 to 2 years.

In case of recurrence around one or more teeth, a new appointment is sometimes scheduled in order to perform a more thorough sanitation session or to undertake a periodontal surgery procedure.

In the absence of maintenance, it has been shown that periodontitis most often recurs. With proper maintenance, periodontitis rarely recurs. This happens when a risk factor has been underestimated (smoking, stress, general health) or when the individual’s susceptibility to periodontitis is particularly high (genetic risk, undiagnosed diabetes).
